Summary: BLEACH/ONE PIECE CROSSOVER: Abarai Renji finally gets his big break in the world of voice acting. First snag? It’s a Boys’ Love anime. Bigger snag? He finds himself strangely attracted to his co-star. (Much love to [livejournal.com profile] bronzetigress for the wonderful beta magic!)

He clicked his tongue absently as his fingers ghosted over the slick new spines of many books, row after row, searching for one in particular. There was another chorus of giggles and whispered conversations behind him, and he sighed heavily, tugging the rim of his black baseball cap further down over his eyes. There were a handful of places in the world that a grown man never really expected to find himself. Standing in the shoujo section of a crowded bookstore looking for a Boys' Love manga was definitely one of them.

The tips of his fingers finally came to rest on the title he’d been searching for. ' Love Compass’. Shit, what a ridiculous name. Pulling volume one carefully from the shelf he eyed the cover dubiously. Two appropriately beautiful, slightly feminine, boys stared at him from the glossy surface and he snorted under his breath. One of the characters was dressed in modern clothes with shaggy black hair and glasses; the other was blond and pale with ridiculously long hair and … pirate clothes?

Fan-fucking-tastic.

He turned the book over in his hands to read the blurb at the back but only got as far as ‘Touya was a lonely orphan inexperienced in the ways of love-‘ before groaning under his breath and closing his eyes. Another wave of hushed giggles washed over him and he tilted his head in consideration. Well, why the hell not? Go straight to the source!

Spinning on his heel and planting the most charming smile he could muster on his face, he turned to the group of schoolgirls that had been watching him ever since he entered the manga area of the bookstore. They were seated around a large table in the café section sipping on iced coffees and lattés. He slowly reached up to tug his cap off as he walked, pulling it free of his hair and letting the bright red mane flutter down his back. Two of the girls made eeping noises. A third looked like she might pass out. He had one feature he knew the ladies loved, and damned if he wasn't going to use it.

“Excuse me, ladies. May I ask you a question?”

By now most of the half dozen girls were sporting pretty little blushes, but they managed to nod or answer affirmatively to his question. He held the book up towards them so they could easily see the cover and kept the smile on his lips as he spoke.

“Have any of you ever read this title?”

Two of the girls blushed a little deeper and nodded sheepishly. His smile warmed as he snatched a nearby chair and spun it around backwards to straddle it. Seating himself uninvited at their table was pushing it, but the group simply giggled some more and blushed anew. He’d won them over already. It was the hair. Worked like a charm.

“May I ask what you thought of it?”

The pair that had responded to his previous question stammered a bit before they began but eventually got around to answering.

“L-Love Compass? Y-yeah … it’s … it’s really popular. There are a lot of volumes out, it’s been ongoing for a while … although I heard the author is going to be finishing up the story soon.”

The other girl nodded politely before speaking up. “It’s a really beautiful story … b-but it’s pretty sad. I don’t think it’s going to have a happy ending.”

He cocked his head to the side and crossed his arms over the back of the chair in front of him. The smile slipped from his face in curiosity. “Oh, really? Why do you say that?”

A gleam sparked in the young woman’s eyes as she leaned forward conspiratorially. Inwardly, he figured she was likely excited about getting to speak unabashedly about a Boys' Love manga to a guy of all things. Probably a big trip to a teenage girl.

“Well, see … Touya’s had a really hard life, right? He was orphaned and didn’t have many friends and didn’t really have any aspirations in his life…”

He blinked. It was not a story he was unfamiliar with.

“… and he finds this really old compass in this Antique store he works at and buys it.”

Compass … right. Explains the name, then.

“The compass is actually haunted by the ghost of a young pirate, Ciel – that’s the blond - who was killed a long time ago.”

A sharp bite to the tongue kept him from scoffing or snorting at the silly premise. A ghost of a pirate and a loser kid? Sounded like a great romance. Sarcasm completely intended, of course.

The first girl spoke up again, gaining more confidence at the fact that this strange man appeared to be honestly interested in what they were saying.

“It’s a pretty melancholy series. There’s some humor and stuff … but mostly it’s just about this deep romance that’s obviously doomed to failure before it even starts. And the art is so gorgeous! Kawashima-san is so talented!”

He glanced down at the book, and indeed Kawashima was the name of the series creator. Studying the cover a little closer, another thought snuck into his brain. One he hadn’t considered before. He cleared his throat and purposely didn’t raise his eyes from the comic in his hands.

“Do they ever … do they … you know?”

One of the girls practically squealed under her breath and when he looked up, they were all six blushing furiously. The one who had spoken the most simply nodded her head while staring at his hands and clearly avoiding his gaze. He cleared his throat once more and seriously considered stabbing out his own eyes for what he was about to ask.

“Which … *cough* … which of the two was … was … the … the … bott-“

The girls all now squealed openly and half of them covered their faces with their hands. He could feel his own face beginning to warm and cursed himself inwardly. Honestly, he didn’t expect them to answer, but one finally whispered ’Touya’ from behind her hands.

Immediately he groaned and his head dropped forward to smack against his crossed arms on the back of the chair. Red hair cascaded around his face to create a crimson curtain blocking him off from the world in general.

Figures. Just fuckin’ figures.

“Onii-san?”

He raised his head to meet the questioning gazes of the table before him. Trying to smile, he plopped his chin on his forearms and lifted his eyebrows in answer.

The girl who had spoken momentarily glanced at her friends to gain support before turning back towards him. “If … if you don’t mind us asking … why are you so interested in that title, Onii-san?”

Chuckling softly, he leaned back in the chair and tucked his long hair behind his ears.

“Well … It's being made into an anime, you see-“

A round of delighted gasps interrupted him and if it was even possible, it appeared as if his audience was more rapt than ever.

“-and I’m going to be doing the voice of Touya.”

That was it. Utter chaos followed. The young ladies lost it, as only groups of teenage girls are capable, and he was forced into a round of pictures and autographs and games of twenty questions.

“What’s your name, Onii-san? So we can look for you?”

Abarai. Abarai Renji.

“What else have you been in, Abarai-san? Would we recognize you?”

Just small bit parts here and there. Not really.

“Are … Are those tattoos, Abarai-san? Did they hurt?”

Yes. And you better believe it.

“Is that your natural hair color, Abarai-san? It’s so unusual!”

Had it all my life. Gotten used to it.

“What’s your birthday? What’s your blood type? Where were you born?”

Honestly, he was pretty amazed when he finally made it out of the bookstore alive. Hair once again being held back in a pseudo ponytail by the gap of his baseball cap and dark glasses covering his eyes, he darted across the street towards the train station on the next block.

A small plastic bag swung from his arm stuffed with the first five volumes of Love Compass. The group had bought them for him, insisting he read the manga to ‘get into character’. Then they’d begged for his email address and requested first rights on creating his fan club. He’d laughed good naturedly and complied, not telling the girls that with his luck the show would be a complete failure and he’d be out on the streets within weeks.

As he settled into a seat on the train that would take him towards his home, Renji marveled again at his own personal brand of fucked-up luck. He’d been trying for years to catch a break in the world of voice acting, and only recently had been gaining bit parts here and there. Then when he was finally offered a lead after all this time … it’s a Boys’ Love anime. Something he’d never really considered himself for, given his deep, almost grating voice. And yet, here he was … and he was going to be the bottom, to boot.

Really, there’s nothing else you can do in this situation but laugh.

So he did.

Abarai Renji pushed through the main entrance of his apartment complex with a morose sigh tearing from his lips. He eyed the out of order sign on the elevator for the millionth time with a look of utter disdain and cursed the landlord. Again.

Fucking old man Yama. Ignores the problems around him until things finally break down … then takes forever to fix them.

He started the long trek up the stairs to the 11th story and his own apartment. At least it was helping to keep him in shape, if nothing else. When he hit the 11th floor landing he quietly kicked off his shoes, as he always did, and ever so slowly snuck down the hall towards his flat. It was bad enough trying to sneak by Ikkaku and Yumichika’s apartment without getting snagged into an all night drinking binge, but if you caught the attention of Kenpachi … things would end up much worse.

There was a reason that the entire apartment complex not-so-lovingly referred to the eleventh as the ‘fucking nut job floor’. Renji didn’t mind, though. These were his people. They were rowdy and loud and unaffected by the whispers and stares of the less tolerant. Many a night found him with Kaku and Yumi, Rangiku from next door, Hisagi and Kira from down the hall, and hell, sometimes even Kenpachi, drinking until the wee hours of the morning and having a hell of a time.

It was home.

He sighed as he closed and locked the door of his apartment safely behind himself. Dropping his boots on the floor and the bag of books carelessly on the table, he moved to the couch and flopped backwards like a sack of potatoes. There was a small jingle to his right and he turned his head towards the bedroom to watch a large orange tabby saunter towards him.

“Heyya, Kon. What’s up, buddy?”

The cat stopped and sat down in the middle of the floor, glaring at him with open hostility. Renji ‘tsked’ at the feline.

“What’s got your panties in a bunch?”

There was an irritated flick of the ear, and honest to fucking shit if the little bastard didn’t sneer at him over his shoulder as he turned to saunter back towards the bedroom.

Renji glared after the cat. He didn’t care what anyone said, that little bastard could understand every damn word out of his mouth. He knew it!

“Don’t you fucking dare go in there to piss on my shoes again, you little fucking handbag!”

The cat paused at the door and actually swiveled his head around to look at the man on the couch.

“Get over here and greet me properly, you sunovabitch, or I’m making the vet appointment tomorrow! Snip! Snip! Snip!”

That got him. A quick little trot and jump and taadaa … cat in lap prepared to be petted. Renji chuckled as he stroked though the feline’s soft fur and shook his head. Didn’t a day go by that he didn’t outwardly curse Ichigo and Rukia for running off and leaving him with their damn bi-polar cat. Inwardly, however, he was glad of the company, no matter how moody it might be.

He felt his hand still and his mood darken as it always did with the thought of Ichigo and Rukia. He understood well enough by now that they’d been forced to go. Rukia’s adopted family would never approve of Ichigo and there was just no way the two could be separated like that. They needed each other.

Needed each other enough to run off and leave the third wheel behind to fend for his fucking self.

His brain always told him he was being ridiculous. His heart always argued back that his two best friends in the world, the only family he had, had abandoned him and he had a right to fucking whine about it, damn it.

Kon hopped off his lap to go get in trouble somewhere, and Renji laid down fully on the couch and closed his eyes. He really, really hoped this job worked out somehow. He really fucking needed a break. Just one.
